Product Review: Sleek True Colour Lipstick

I know it’s summer and we’re meant to be floating around in sundresses and pastels, but I’ll love dark, deep colours 5ever and ever amen. You will have to prise my purple lipsticks from my dead, cold hands.

image

image

The shade I’m wearing in the pictures above is called “Madly Mahogany”, which is a little bit misleading given that it’s this wonderful “Wicked Stepmother” kind of purple.

The shade above is the rather obviously named “Black” (you know you’ve spent too much time reading OPI labels when you want a snazzier name for it). I am yet to wear it in public, but the time will be soon. SOON!

Sleek lipstick is pretty fantastic, although looking at the website, I have a feeling that my lipsticks are the last of the old casing and shading category; now Sleek True Colour Lipstick has snazzy matte black packaging and new colours.

The texture of the lipstick itself is smooth and creamy, and doesn’t dry out my lips like a lot of other lip colours do. I don’t have to put anything on top or underneath to make it function as it should (although it’s best if your lips are moisturised; Lypsyl is yourfriend).

It also smells pretty good, though you might not want to put too much weight on that statement, as I’m someone who actually likesthe smell of unscented lipstick. There is nothing I dislike about this product, to be quite honest.

Price?

About £4 in the UK, which is incredible value given that most pharmacy lip colours retail for about six to eight pounds.

Where can I get it?

All over the Internet, but here’s their website.

Rating: 10/10

Nail It: Constellation Nails

image

From thumb to little finger, the constellations on my left hand are:

  • Ursa Major
  • Aquila
  • Serpens
  • Libra
  • Canis (Major??? I know there’s a Canis Minor, but I don’t know whether you’re meant to say “Canis & Canis Minor” or “Canis Major and Canis Minor”. Any astronomers in the house?)

image

From little finger to thumb, the constellations on my right hand are:

  • Cygnus
  • Triangulum
  • Phoenix
  • Crater
  • Andromeda and Pegasus.

Inspired by a submission I found through fuckyeahnailart, I thought I’d give it a go and honour my degree at the same (fuck yeah, English Literature and Classical Studies! Or should that be ita vero est futuo? I’m here all week, guys).

They’re easy enough to do, so here’s how.

You will need:

  • Base colour in black or deep blue
  • Multicoloured glitter polish that has lots of silver in it
  • White nail art pen (or alternatively, white nail varnish and a dotting tool)
  • Clear topcoat.

image

I used Stargazer Nail Polish in shades #146 (glitter) and #129 (black), Barry M in shade #54 (Clear), and two nail art pens in silver and white.

First step: paint your nails with your desired base coat. Two coats should do for a nice opaque coverage.

Second step: sweep the glitter topcoatlightly over your nails. You don’t want it to be too glittery, otherwise your constellation won’t stand out.

I experimented with two kinds of silver topcoat, and in the end settled for the one with hints of other colours, as it looked really good against the black. Wait for all of this to dry before you move onto the…

Third step: dot your constellations on with your nail art pen/dotting tool! It helps to use a reference; I have a dictionary with the Northern and Southern Hemispheres’ constellations, so I used that, and put Northern stars on my left hand and Southern ones on my right.

And there you have it: constellation nails, something subtle, sparkly and smart (in both senses of the word).

My first post-exam post/PSA has been brought to you courtesy of sunstroke.

Or something a little like it.

The sun has been ridiculous these past two days, not that I’m complaining AT ALL, because anything that gives me an excuse to wear itty-bitty dresses and cool aviator shades is A-OK with me.

But as with everything in life, there are downsides to such glorious weather and one of those is skin damage. I’m not one of those crazy people who’s obsessed with staying out of the sun, but UVA/UVB rays can do some serious damage to your skin.

We tend to think that because we have black skin, we won’t burn, but this isn’t actually true, especially for those with less melanin or more sensitive skin. (Ask my mum. Or me at age four.) Best way to protect is, of course, sunscreen. It doesn’t have to be SPF5000, but something that stands in between your skin and the sun is always a good idea. And of course, even if you don’t burn, there’s dryness, wrinkles (!) and sunspots to consider.

Usually I wear make-up with SPF, but it’s too hot for foundation and I haven’t found a decent powder yet, so this will have to do.

image

I bought this Solait sunscreen from Superdrug for £4.79. It’s nothing fancy, but I really wanted a clear sunscreen that wasn’t too much like a cream, and all the ones with higher SPF had tanning activators (which surely goes against the whole ‘sun protection’ thing…). It sprays on like a body oil and is absorbed very quickly, although I still had to put cocoa butter on over it.

It doesn’t take much to do a full-body application, so I’m hoping that it will go far!

Rating: 8/10. I would have liked a slightly higher SPF and a nicer scent. It disappears when rubbed in, but smells slightly like rubbing alcohol when first sprayed on.

(AND YES MY EXAMS ARE OVER MOFOS YAAAAAAAAAAAY I LOVE YOU ALL FOR NOT UNFOLLOWING THANK YOU KINDLY SPAM SPAM SPAM)
